Mini Mackerel Yummy

The fish is certainly loved by my fur babies and arrived promptly and in box with insulation. The only downside was that the clear bags they were in all had holes and the fish kept falling out as I was trying to unpack and put into freezer. I would buy this product again and if bagís donít split it would be a bonus

Buyers beware, if your dog loves sardines it doesn';t mean it'll like other fish too

my low score is NOT a reflection of quality. My German Shepherd absolutely loves the sardines, which she has had one of every day, after her meat, for a very long time, she gets extremely excited, looking ultra intelligent and dancing about my feet until I put it in her bowl. Thinking I was being nice I bought the mackerel this time for a change but to my surprise and horror she only sniffed it, looked at me and walked away, she came back and had another sniff and picked it up only to promptly drop it and walk away again, I was gutted to say the least mostly because I ordered 2 lots of what I thought were 1kg bags because the Sardines come in 1kg bags and I'm sure the mackerel did come in 1kg bags too. Consequently I received 2 lots of the mackerel (what I now know are 8kg each (obviously amounting to 16kg of something my dog won't touch which cost me £76. Luckily I have a big freezer of which her food takes up 2 drawers (I usually buy a 5kg bag and a 10kg bag of 2 different meats plus a 1kg bag of sardines. Imagine my horror to receive 16kg (in 1kg bags) of mackerel which I eventually managed to get in the freezer after a thorough reshuffle. I tried cutting it into chunks to give her as treats but she won't take it and I tried giving it to her during the day as a treat instead of being part of her dinner but she wasn't fooled. The only option I have left is to boil it and pick the meat off hoping that she'll eat it cooked (just as a way of trying to use it but who's got the time to pick the meat off of 16kg of mackerel especially with all the little bones to contend with (I haven't tried her with a cooked one yet) but if she still won't eat it I'll have to throw it away at a cost of £76. Mortified.

Response:

Hi Davina. We do sell the Mackerel in 1kgs bags and also in 8kg amounts, the same as the Sardines and Sprats. You just have to be sure to check what you're buying. There is a huge prices diffrence too so not sure how you managed to buy the 8kgs instead of the 1kg bag?

Puppies are fed a larger amount of food over 2 or 3 meals per day.

Your dogs age, health and other factors like the summer / winter and levels of activity will affect their food intake so keep an eye on their feeding and adjust as needed.

You should be able to feel your dogs ribs when running your hand along their side and they should have a waist.

It's better to weigh the food or use a measure instead of guessing the weight, as it’s easy to over feed.

Always feed under supervision
Always ensure fresh drinking water is available

User Guide

Below is a simple guide for people feeding raw food to their dog. This is not set in stone should be used only as a rough guide:

Each and every dog is different and what works with one dog may not work with another, even if they are the same breed and age.
There are many raw feeding Facebook groups in which people will answer your questions and offer advice.

Do your research and make notes on how it affects your dog, it'll take a bit of time before you work out a feeding plan for your dog.

Never cook or warm anything with bones in (Mince, wings, necks, carcasses etc)
Raw chicken bones are soft and will easily be chewed up by your dog.
As soon as they are cooked or even warmed they will start to harden and this can be dangerous.

One common mistake is feeding too much, it can be very deceiving and the appropriate amount usually looks like it's not enough. Never mix dry or cooked food with raw.
Pick an amount of food to feed and stick to this for a few weeks one of three things will happen:

1) Your dog will gain weight.
2) Your dog will lose weight.
3) Your dogs weight will stay the same.

If you look at our feeding guide we have given you a simple sum based on your dogs current weight and what you want them to do I.E lose or gain weight. This sum is a good starting point but every dog is very different in their food needs.

This amount of food will change throughout the year, during the hotter month dogs tend to eat less than during the winter months.
Keep an eye on your dog’s weight and adjust the food from there.
9 times out of 10 it’s not the amount of food that affects a dog’s weight its all the treats and titbits over the course of a day or week that you may not keep track of.

Don't Panic

Your dog will take some time to fully adjust to it's new diet, give them time and you will see the results of the change.

Take things slowly with introducing new food sources. Each dog is different but rushing things is one of the main reasons people feel their dog cannot cope with raw.

Aim to feed a balanced diet and include a mix of seasonal foods as time passes but not all at once.

Supervise feeding. We would recommend this to all people.
Follow basic kitchen health practices. Wash hands, wipe surfaces etc, sensible hygiene is always necessary when handling raw meat.

"They Love It" is 100% raw minced chicken, because of this you need to follow these guidelines to ensure the safe handling and use of this product.

When your food turns up, put it into your freezer as soon as possible.
To defrost ready for use we recommend removing the required amount from the freezer and leaving in a covered dish or other leak proof container, ideally in the fridge to defrost, if you are leaving the food on the counter top to defrost only leave out until the surface frost has melted and then place back into the fridge for the rest of the thawing.
Store at between 0°c and 4°c and use within 3 days.

If defrosting or placing in fridge make sure it's on a plate to catch drippings and place on the bottom shelf in case any blood drips and ensure it is fully defrosted before serving.

We do not recommend leaving the food out on the side for long periods of time to defrost as depending on the temperature within your room / house it could allow the food to go off.
It's best to think ahead and defrost the food in your fridge for safety.
If your dog is leaving food you may need to lessen the amount you are feeding.

All the tubs, spoons food bowls etc are washed in warm soapy water and hands are also kept clean before and after handling food and feeding.
